Barbara Harrington Shares Her Make Up and Skin Care Tips to Create That Perfect Finish

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Many of my clients ask me, well…how do you create a flawless finish on my face? What we want to do is enhance one’s own beauty in applying makeup, but to do this…it begins with having good skin. You see, your skin is like a canvas. And the first place to start is with is foundation, the building blocks to a beautiful face.

I know, I know…Foundation….Yeah, Right?!

Many women skip this step altogether or simply use the wrong shade or type of foundation. But what we’re all forgetting here; to get that clean, fresh start…we need to start with a great canvas to support our master piece.

Ok…I think you are getting the picture.

Here are some of my best tips for enhancing your own beauty personality Style in creating your best face forward. And it’s not as hard as you think.

One of the biggest questions I get from my clients is this: Do I Really Need Foundation???

And …let’s say you have great skin….I’d say. You are one lucky person. Then…all you need is first to apply a good moisturizer (SeneGence SeneDerm) Day Time Moisturizer, which has been tested to be an SPF equivalent of 15). Next, you need is a little concealer and blush. Now…if you are bit red, or pale, has uneven tone, large pores, or acne, etc., then you need to cover your skin with foundation (perhaps mix the moisturizer with the foundation to a tinted moisturizer really) to create that flawless finish.

How does that sound?

Most of the complaints I hear….it is so hard in choosing the right shade of foundation. What is interesting with the SeneGence’s MakeSense Foundation is that it does a color correction within your family of colors. But again….to really do your face justice and choose the right color for you, what I need to know to help you is …your color tone – warm or cool and to pin point the tone of foundation, what you skin looks like…is it pale, medium or darker shades. Then, the idea is to really blend with your own coloring, because it is very hard to exactly match. What I do next is choose three colors and see which one basically disappears into the jar line area…so that I can see if it is appropriate for you neckline as well. What you don’t want is a demarcation between you neck and you face. The next step is to see how it looks on your skin. Please know that I have many clients I have never met, and what I do is ask a series of questions, a talk about color so that I can choose the best color for you.

Make Sense?

Most women don’t think about this, but a wonderful aspect about wearing foundation, is its ability to fight the elements like sun, wind and cold, harsh winter air. Even a foundation, even without the SPF still provides a good barrier, especially against sun damage. With SeneGence’s Foundation, it does have an SPF equivalent of 15 and couple that with the moisturizer, and it has been rated as an SPF equivalent of 30 by independent laboratory testing Then truly, you will never regret saving your skin. It’s all about beautiful skin.

To Blush or Not to Blush…..Now that is great question:

Please know that by only applying foundation or base, you have that look that is flat in my opinion. It is kind of a dead look. To put your best face forward, you really want to create a three-dimensional face— one that provides warmth, and enhances skin and bone structure. In order to give your face that depth….one of the things you need to do is add some blush to highlight the “structures” of your face.

A real common question – can I sleep in this make up? . No….If you are going to sleep for the night, it is best to wash your face. Yes…Mom was right.

Ok….many of us are guilty of sleeping with our make up on. So understand, it really isn’t good for your skin. So..it is essential in having an easy, simple routine. Make sure you have a good cleanser and skin protector steps…since these are essential. And the same for your morning routine.

I know when I sleep in my makeup….my skin doesn’t feel its best and when I sleep with eyeliner or mascara, oh…I know that I didn’t give my eyes or my skin a chance to relax as well.

Senegence’s Anti-Aging Skin Care is great for waking up to refreshed skin. At night, your first remove the color technology with Foops! And then, your wash your face with a 3-in-1 cleaner that cleans, exfoliates, and tones. Next apply an eye crème, SeneGence’s feels so silky and smooth and melts like butter, and finally apply the night cream. It feels so luxurious.

SeneGence’s Skin Care System (Day, Night, Eye Crème, and Cleanser) costs $135 (plus handling/shipping) and my clients all admit it’s worth the investment.

In the morning, you will repeat, with the 3 – in – cleanser, moisturizer with a lighter moisturizer for day, and then apply your makeup steps.

Remember, whatever you do, treat you skin with TLC (tender loving care), because it is never too late improve the canvas you were born with.

Barb’s Basic Foundation Tips

1. Tips in Selecting Foundation

a. Select a foundation that matches your underlying skin tone exactly.

b. Experiment with three shades on your face that you think will work…and see which one disappears.

2. Application Tips

a. Apply Foundation with a brush, a slightly damp sponge or on the tips of your fingers. If you want our foundation to last, don’t use fingers.

b. Start at the top of the face and work in a downward motion.

3. More Tips

a. Foundation application can be heavy or light; Fast application – mix foundation with day time moisturizer

b. More dewy look – use alittle of the night time moisturizer mixed in your foundation as well.

Fresh: Daily Beauty Guide

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

For a busy woman on the go, it is a challenge to make sure that you completed your daily beauty regiment. How many times have you forgotten to add a moisturizer, style your hair, spray a sweet smelling perfume, etc.? It has happened to all busy women. To help you with your daily beauty, just remember this acronym FRESH (face, rouge, eyes, scent, and hair), so you wouldn’t forget anything.

Face

After you get out of the shower, the first thing you should start beautifying is your face. First, put moisturizer and anti wrinkle cream if needed onto your skin. Wait a few minutes. Then, add your concealer and foundation, so your face looks one color. Remember to pat your foundation and concealer to blend and never rub them in. Otherwise, you defeat the purpose of using foundation and concealer to hide unwanted blemishes, wrinkles, dark circles, age spots, etc. After you are finished, add some powder on top of your fountain and concealer. Remember your face at this point should look like a blank canvas.

Rouge

Once your face is one color, now it’s time to add some life. First, add blush or bronzer to parts of your face that the sun will hit such as cheeks, chin, forehead, and nose. Then, add lip gloss or lip stick to enhance your lips. If you plan to add more emphasis to your lips, pick darker colors. However if you want to bring out your eyes, deemphasize your lips by using pale neutral colors.

Eyes

If you wear contact lenses, put them in before you even start applying your makeup. Otherwise if you are teary eyed, you may mess up your makeup. Once you added a base and color, it’s time to make your eyes gorgeous. If you choose to stick with a soft color for your lips, you can add more color, eye liner, and mascara to your eyes. You want to stick with natural colors for eye shadow such as purple, pink, and browns. These colors are great for women who emphasized their lips. However if you have green, blue, or hazel eyes, you can add more trendy colors such as light green, pale blues, or soft yellows. Remember to blend your eye shadow and make sure it looks natural. Afterwards, you can add eye liner, which is perfect for going out at night. For eyeliner, you want natural colors such as black, brown, or violet. Then, put a light coating of black or brown mascara on your eye lashes. Now, you are finished with your makeup.

Scent

The next step is to add a scent such as a fragrance or perfume. When choosing a scent, you want something that is light smelling and compliments the season. Some seasonal scents are apples and pears for the fall, holiday berries and peppermints for the winter, flowers and strawberries for the spring, and ocean and watermelon for the summer. Regardless of what scents you choose, just be careful not to purchase strong scents that make others sneeze because they may not want to be near you. After you picked a scent that is appropriate for the season and others, you can apply it to your wrists and/or neck.

Hair

Finally if you are in a hurry, your hair should brush and comb your hair before styling it with a flat iron, blower dryer, and/or curling iron. However if it is a nice day out and you can wait an hour to leave your home, you can always towel dry your hair and let the heat dry it. After you are done styling your hair, you may want to brush it again to put it up or leave it down. You can also add any other hair products such as anti frizz or volumizer for lasting affects.

Blepharoplasty Myths-What An Eyelid Lift Can And Cannot Achieve

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

The eyes are the “window to the soul” and our most important facial feature. Unfortunately the eyelids are the first of our facial features to show the signs of facial aging often as early as the late 20’s or early 30’s. Many people complain that they are told that they look tired when they do not, a condition called tired eyes

Consequently many people seek plastic surgery to reverse the eyelid aging changes with a procedure called a blepharoplasty also known as an eyelid lift or eye tuck. This is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States and usually the first facial rejuvenation procedure that people seek.

The operation involves removing hooding or excess skin from the upper eyelid (upper blepharoplasty) and removing puffiness or bags from the lower eyelid (lower blepharoplasty).

Unfortunately most people do not really understand what these operations can and cannot correct and many people undergo the surgery only to be disappointed with the results achieved during the typical blepharoplasty as done in the United states today. The purpose of this article is to educate the consumer by exposing commonly held myths about the plastic surgery operation known as the blepharoplasty so that people considering eyelid rejuvenation will seek the appropriate treatment to correct the particular eyelid aging changes which are occurring on their own unique face.

Blepharoplasty Myth 1- Blepharoplasty will remove crow’s feet. Crow’s feet occur because of the repeated movement and contraction of the eyelid muscles that surround the eye and upper cheek. When we smile, blink etc, the muscle contracts and causes a wrinkle in the skin. After many years these lines become permanent. The blepharoplasty removes fat that causes bags, and can tighten the eyelid skin, but the muscle continues to contact and cause crow’s feet. Blepharoplasty does not correct crow’s feet. Fortunately Botox® can remove the crow’s feet from the cheek very effectively although Botox® needs to be repeated.

Blepharoplasty Myth 2- Blepharoplasty will remove wrinkled aged skin often called “crepiness” and restore the lower eyelid skin to fresh, young looking smooth skin. The Blepharoplasty can tighten the lower eyelid skin, but blepharoplasty alone leaves the eyelid skin looking old and damaged. The LaserLyte Peel™ when done at the time of a blepharoplasty can resurface the lower eyelid skin and leave it fresh looking-but blepharoplasty alone cannot achieve this

Blepharoplasty Myth 3- Blepharoplasty lifts the cheek and corrects puffiness below the eyelid. Many people have excess skin that creates a bulge or swelling on the cheekbone just below the eyelid. When you take your finger and pull the lower eyelid up this bulge, which is called a “festoon” smoothes out. Blepharoplasty alone will not improve the festoon. In fact if during a lower eyelid blepharoplasty fat, which is causing puffiness of the lower eyelid, is removed the festoon actually looks worse. This is a very common problem and can be a very unhappy result of a blepharoplasty. Festoons are hard to treat but can be improved by doing a cheek lift in some people. The important thing is to avoid worsening them by not doing fat removal during blepharoplasty in people who have festoons unless the cheek lift or other procedure is done at the same time. Other procedures such as canthoplasty or orbiculopexy done during the blepharoplasty can help.

Blepharoplasty Myth 4- Blepharoplasty will remove dark circles under the eyes. Many people have dark circles under the eyes-a dark shadow overlying the bone just below the eyelid. In many people a blepharoplasty will make the dark circle worse if too much fat is removed. To remove the dark circle under the eyes a special procedure called the arcus marginalis release and fat grafting must be done to correct the dark circle.

Blepharoplasty Myth 5- Blepharoplasty will remove hooding of the upper eyelid and improve eyebrow position. Many people have hooding of the upper eyelids that is caused not only by loose upper eyelid skin but also by the fact that the eyebrow has sagged as well. In these people an eyebrow lift must also be done to restore the upper eyelid to a youthful look.

Blepharoplasty Myth 6- A lower eyelid blepharoplasty must leave a visible scar on the lower eyelid. While traditional scalpel blepharoplasty does use an incision on the lower eyelid, more modern contemporary blepharoplasty is done with a laser through a small opening on the inside of the lower eyelid and leaves no visible scar. This technique, called the transconjunctival laser lower blepharoplasty not only avoids a scar but also preserves the beautiful natural shape of the eyelid. The traditional scalpel blepharoplasty done through an external incision often damages the supporting muscles of the lower eyelid and as a result the outside corner of the lower eyelid turns down into a “sad eyed” or “hound dog” look.

Beautiful eyelid rejuvenation is possible today using advanced new laser techniques, and additional new variations such as the arcus release, canthoplasty, and orbiculopexy. However these techniques are new and not widely practiced yet. It is very important that you understand what the eyelid rejuvenation techniques called blepharoplasty or eyelid lift or eyelid tuck can and cannot achieve and also that you have knowledge of the newest, safest, and most effective techniques. Only by being well informed can you hope to be happy with your result and not be disappointed or worse, have a different problem than you had before surgery. For a more thorough discussion of these issues study blepharoplasty in the archives of “ask dr seckel” and “whats new” at saveyourface.com.

Making Halloween Ghosts – 3 Impressive Ideas

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Halloween is all about having fun with your friends and family. Among the best parts of Halloween are decorating the house with hand made crafts. And when these crafts are all hand made, the more the merrier! Halloween festivity really gets enhanced when you walk in to a haunted house full of ghost crafts!

Now I’m sure, you all must be looking for some free Halloween crafts that are easy enough for you to follow and can surely impress your guests!

Well, internet is a hub for several ideas. Once you have the ideas and tips and tricks, you can use your innovative skills to make the ideas even more interesting. Creativity and imagination is the key to make your decorations as exclusive and attractive and spooky as you with to. Here are a few ideas to get started:

1. Tissue Ghosts

This is perhaps the writer’s favorite. Take a piece of Kleenex. Gather it together such that it forms a bulb at the top and the bottom should be splaying out. Shaped almost like a ghost! Now, with a rubber band twist and tie to maintain the shape of the bulb. You can also use a garbage bag for the same. This becomes the ghost’s head. So just tie it as tight as possible! Now grab on a black magic marker to dot in the eyes, nose and mouth. The Kleenex ghost is ready to spook around. You can make loads of these and hang around the house. This would impress your friends & family and friends. You would be able to boast as a Halloween crafts pro!

2. Singing Ghosts

You can make scary balloon ghosts to hand outside the house and add some spookiness to your Halloween. Take 2 white plastic bags. These are easily available at the near by grocery stores or Wal-Mart. Now cut the handles and the written part of these plastic bags. Now start shredding the bottom of the plastic bags leaving away the seams. Try to make 1 inch shreds. Beware that the cuts are around 1 inch away from the seams. Now blow up your balloon & make a knot so that it remains inflated. Along with the top knot, now tape 1 bag to the backside of the balloon & 1 bag towards the front. Preferably use black-duct tape s it has quite good grip. Now, draw a ghost face. Tie a string surrounding the knot. The ghost is ready to hang! It can be even more entertaining if you tie some bells at the bottom shreds of the ghost. Now you would hear it haunting in the breeze!

3. Transparent Ghosts

Cut out the shape of the ghost from 2 sheets of wax paper. Now, cut out its eyes, a ghoulish mouth and other effects if you wish to, using construction paper. Next, pick out one of the wax paper ghosts. Lay it on the top of a newspaper. Place its eyes & mouth in the right place. Now sprinkle the remaining portions with glitter. Further, carefully place the remaining wax paper ply in line with the bottom edge of the prior (that is placed on the newspaper). Slowly overlap the lower wax paper ghost and further place a sheet of newspaper on them. Heat the iron at medium level. Run it over the ghost in order to meld the two wax paper ghosts. Finally, shred the extra sparkles from the ghost’s body, and attach a string to the same. Hang this anywhere you feel like and have spooky fun!

So, with a little know-how you can make wonderful ghost crafts to make your Halloween special!

What do I do about wrinkles in eye bags?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I have wrinkles in my eye bags but only when i smile; but I’m 15 so I shouldn’t have wrinkles.

So has anyone tried hemroid cream for I bags?
I figure once I get rid of the bags I’ll be wrinkle less too.

Oh and do you know of any good exfoliators that can be used daily? It can’t be like a cleanser because I already have one for acne and I tried two before but it made my acne worse.

na, that’s a myth…

What causes under eye puffiness (bags) and what is a good home remedy for them?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I’ve awoke the past 3 mornings with horrible luggage under my eyes, this is a first for me (officially getting older I suppose) and I would like some quick fixers to lessen the damage. HELP!

I have been using Arbonne’s Nutrimin c re9 regime.
The eye cream, eye lift and also serum has reduced my puffy eyes, and dark circles so much.
It’s not a home remedy – (I am 39). I am amazed at how much it helps –

Otherwise cut down on salt, drink lots of water
and tea bags, and cucumbers may help.

What under eye concealer do you recommend?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

For foundation I use bareminerals medium tan. However, I think I’ll have to drop a shade since my summer tan is fading a bit. I haven’t found an under eye concealer that I like for my olive skin. They either are too orange, create creases, stay sticky, dont blend well, etc. I need one that works well. Any suggestions would be amazing! (: thank you!

First of all, I am in love with Bare Minerals. I am a makeup Artist use them myself.
And I don’t think you need a separate concealer. All you need to do is get a little bit of SAME powder you use for your face, and put a drop of water on it. Mix it well with the concealer brush that comes with the starter kit. (If you don’t have the starter kit then/concealer brush) Then just use your finger to blend it well and use it to conceal under your eyes. It will not be sticky, and you will not have to pay extra for anything else.

BUT! If you want to buy a separate concealer, then i HIGHLY recommend the Clinique Concealers.
They are the best product for people who have sensitive skin (Me) and for every other skin types. It doesn’t contain any chemicals, or any harsh products.
They come in 6 different shades, and if you are an olive skin (Like me) Then the Medium beige would be perfect for you. And these concealers are not sticky at all.

Good luck! And look sexy!

what is a good under-eye cream that will get rid of dark circles?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I don’t have wrinkles or puffiness. I simply want something that will get rid of dark circles. Something in the $20-40 price range would be great.

Cucumber slices! over your eyes for 15 minutes. or try placeing a cold metal spoon against your eyes for a few minutes

:}

Is there an effective way to get rid of bags under eyes?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Is there a quick and effective way to get rid of bags under your eyes?

cucumber or a cold teabag usually helps. Anything cold on the eye area should help actually.

Spider Veins Finally Have Help

Friday, December 25th, 2009

For those that know the background of vitamin k and bruises then you know how helpful vitamin k can be for the body and spider and varicose veins are no different since they are somewhat similar to bruises in how they have a blood pool and with spider veins this blood pool can leak from the burdened vein. This leaking becomes visible through the skin and spiders out with the vein itself. So what can vitamin K do to help? The answer is that vitamin K can help to seal off the veins. These spider veins can be visible anywhere on the body but are usually found nose, legs or arms.

There are many different professions that seem to be more susceptible to the vein problems. Nurses and pharmacists are to name a few of the professions but anybody that stays on their feet for some time can be susceptible. Pregnant women can also have spider or even varicose veins show up during pregnancy. For most of these women the veins will gradually fade after child birth but for some they will stay unless treated.

So how do you treat spider veins or varicose veins? The first and most natural way is to use a top notch vitamin K cream. These creams should have about 8% vitamin k and should be in a deep penetrating cream base. If the cream stays on the surface it will not help much. Finding a top notch cream is vital to gage whether the cream actually works or not. Our vitamin K cream uses deep penetrating oils that are referred to as carrier oils and the carrier oils carry the vitamin k deep past the upper layers of the skin and to the blood vessel. This is important since the vitamin K has to reach the vein itself to work.

There are several creams on the market including K max, Pro K, Medic 8 and many others. I strongly suggest that you give the creams a good try. It usually takes about 30-45 days to see the beginning results and then another 30 days to fade the veins away and out of sight. The veins are usually and typically healed meaning that the spider veins do not come back.

Most of our customers report that the veins that are healed stay that way and they do not have problems with them again. The vitamin K actually clots the vein and this is why the veins do not constantly need the cream to stay diminished. There are other ways to treat spider veins but the best way to get rid of spider veins is with a cream. There are stronger methods but they usually require some type of expensive surgery based procedure. the best in beauty products and beauty aids means using products that are targeted to your specific need.

About varicose veins – it is important to distinguish the difference between spider veins and varicose veins as varicose veins are usually raised and protrude from the leg while the spider vein is simply visible by the eye but does can not be felt when examining the leg with the finger tips. It is much more difficult to treat varicose veins than it is to treat spider type veins. It does not mean that the vitamin k creams won’t work but they will have a much harder time working on the raised veins.

We have seen results on both types and especially good results with those that have the veins on their nose and face. Many people ask if vitamin k is gentle enough to use on the face and the answer is yes. It works very well on the very little veins on the face. Vitamin k does not cause any type of redness like some other creams can. It is very gentle and can easily be used on the body and face.
